The Scoop: Beach articles and information

In the words of Dr. Beach

Assateague State Park on the north end has the best facilities, but is more crowded than the National Seashore camping area just to the south.  I love to walk north of the state park where only pedestrians are permitted.  you can walk for miles without seeing anyone; this was my favorite beach when I lived in Maryland.  Also, this is where I did my dissertation research on the impact of coastal storms on beach erosion and barrier island rollover by overwash.  As you walk along this barrier shoreline, you can see both the ocean and the bay at the same time because the dunes have been flattened by repeated storm attack.  Several times a year, ocean water surges across Assateague's northern end, eroding dunes on the seaside and burying living salt marshes on the bayside.  It may sound like pure destruction, but this is how islands migrate naturally.  This process has been greatly accelerated at Assateague by the excessively high beach erosion rates caused by sand starvation.

You will likely see the famous ponies of Assateague Island.  Beware - these small horses are wild and are known to bite and kick.  they are also beggars for food, and feeding the ponies is illegal.  During a camping trip that I planned for a number of city folks to North Beach, we had quite an encounter with the ponies.  Someone brought a chocolate cake and left it out on the picnic table overnight.  About 3:00 am, we all awoke to this horrible, loud barfing sound.  A pony had eaten the whole chocolate cake, become ill, and threw it up all over the owner's tent.  The city slickers were horrified, and I doubt that they will go on any more camping trips.

Beach environmental matters

This park is also one of the most popular beach access points much like Vanderbilt Beach. Clam Pass boasts 35 acres of coastal habitat and preserves that habitat by providing beach access from a three-quarter-mile boardwalk to the sandy beach.

The board walk (pictured left) is a destination itself for those adventurists who love a quiet nature walk. Butterflies flutter around the beautiful green backdrop and very often families can be seen taking in a relaxing afternoon in the area.

The boardwalk runs through a mangrove forest of salt-tolerant red, white and black mangroves. It also has a tidal bay area that acts as a breeding ground and nursery for marine life, wildlife, specifically many species of birds.
Clam Pass Park abounds with wading shorebirds, eagles, hawks and osprey.

The beaches of southwest Florida have long been an important nesting area for the loggerhead sea turtle. Loggerhead sea turtles emerge from the Gulf of Mexico to nest on our beaches each summer (May 1 to August 31). Females crawl from the Gulf late at night to lay their nests. Loggerheads deposit, on average, 100 ping pong ball sized eggs in each nest. They usually lay 2 to 3 nests per season on a 2-3 year cycle. The eggs begin to hatch after about 60 days. As the sand begin to cool (usually late evening) the hatchlings scratch their way out of the nest emerging as a group. As the young turtles exit the nest they instinctually seek the Gulf by looking for natural light reflecting off the water.
